Gabion Baskets

Gabion Baskets

Gabion baskets are made of hexagonal double twist woven wire mesh divided into various sized cells and filled with 4"-6" gabion stone. They come in either galvanized wire or PVC coated wire.

Gabion Baskets are used for a wide variety of applications and are permeable, flexible, durable and economical and have been used in many modern civil engineering schemes to provide economic and effective solutions.

Foundation Preparation

The surface of the finished subgrade shall conform to line and grade and extra care should be taken with foundation preparations in order to ensure a level, smooth and compacted surface. A light weight non-woven geotextile shall be placed under and behind the baskets to prevent washing away of any subgrade and backfill material.

Assembly

Place the gabion panels into position and begin lacing the wire on all horizontal and vertical surfaces leaving the top section open until after stone placement.
Use the same fastening procedures, lace the interior diaphragms to assure that there are no open areas.

Placement

Place the empty gabions on the foundation and interconnect the adjacent gabions along the side panels using lacing wire. Place the next layer of gabions on the underlying layer of gabions staggering the vertical joints between the gabions of adjacent rows and layers by at least one metre.

Filling Operation

After gabion units are set to line and grade apply some tension to gain a uniform alignment. The gabions shall be carefully filled with 4" to 6" gabion stone, either by machine or hand methods avoiding bulges, and provide a compact mass that minimizes voids. At no point in the filling process may rock be mechanically placed from a height of over 50 cm from machine to fill area.

Machine placement will require supplementing with handwork to ensure the desired results. The cells in any row shall be filled in stages so that the depth of rock placed in any one cell does not exceed the depth of rock in any adjoining cell by more than 300 mm. Along the exposed faces, the front face of stone shall be carefully placed and arranged by hand to ensure a neat, compact placement with a uniform and pleasing appearance.
